Food Democracy in Action
The Santa Barbara County (SBC) Food Policy Council was founded in 2009 with the commitment of over 30 members from multiple sectors of the regional food system. Current members include farmers, farmworkers, educators, public health professionals, non-profit organizations, processors, restaurant owners, chefs, underrepresented groups, and locally-owned grocery markets.
Santa Barbara County produces more than $1 billion in agricultural products annually yet the food insecurity rate of the county is among the highest in the state of California. The SBC Food Policy Council strives to improve coordination among different sectors of the food system in order to increase the sustainability of the regional food system and to improve access to nutritious, affordable and culturally-acceptable foods.
Council Mission:
To partner with local leaders and community members in advancing an equitable and regional food system. We accomplish this through education and policy development.
